Who Gets to Age on Screen?

We warmly invite you to join us for a lecture and discussion on ageing, visibility, and representation in European cinema.

In AGE-C, we explore who is allowed to age — and how — on screen. Combining film studies, cultural gerontology, and data-driven analysis, our research examines both on-screen representations of ageing and the professional trajectories of ageing practitioners across European film industries.

During the lecture, we will present our methodological framework and demonstrate how our one-of-a-kind dataset (2013–2023) can serve as a valuable resource for ageing studies research. We will also introduce our web-based tool built on this dataset, designed to make data analysis intuitive and accessible for researchers across disciplines.

By making patterns of visibility, inequality, and structural exclusion more measurable, the project opens up new perspectives for interdisciplinary research and critical reflection on European screen cultures.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion with members of the AGE-C research team, offering space for exchange across disciplines.

🗓 Monday, 4 May 2026

AGE-C contributes towards the creation of a European research space by bringing together an international team of researchers whose expertise covers an important share of the EU’s and its neighbors’ territory. Together we conduct and empirical study of how filmmakers and audiences view and interpret issues of old age and gender in European cinema. Our research helps us better understand the current state of European cinema and has further implications for health care and cultural policy
