New Publication: AGE-C Data Paper in NECSUS – European Journal of Media Studies

We are pleased to announce the publication of the data paper “AGE-C: A data-driven approach to ageing and gender in European cinema” in the Autumn 2025 #Ageing issue of NECSUS – European Journal of Media Studies.

The article presents the AGE-C dataset, developed within the international research project Ageing and Gender in European Cinema (AGE-C). The dataset offers a systematic, data-driven approach to the study of ageing and gender in contemporary European film cultures and addresses a significant gap in existing film and media research, where age has rarely been examined through an intersectional and comparative lens.

The AGE-C dataset brings together data on 6,144 films and 13,356 film professionals (including actors, directors, and documentary subjects) produced between 2014 and 2023 across nine European territories: Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. All entries were manually curated and enriched with detailed metadata and an extensive system of thematic and character-based tags.

Designed to support both quantitative and qualitative research, the dataset enables scholars, film practitioners, programmers, and policy-makers to explore patterns of representation, career trajectories of ageing film professionals, and transnational trends related to ageing and gender in European cinema. It also provides a methodological bridge between film studies, cultural gerontology, and digital humanities.

The data paper is authored by Luis Freijo, Gloria Dagnino, Boglárka Angéla Farkas, Olena Gepper, Asja Makarević, Alexandre Moussa, and Adrien Valgalier.

AGE-C contributes towards the creation of a European research space by bringing together an international team of researchers whose expertise covers an important share of the EU’s and its neighbors’ territory. Together we conduct and empirical study of how filmmakers and audiences view and interpret issues of old age and gender in European cinema. Our research helps us better understand the current state of European cinema and has further implications for health care and cultural policy
