AGE-C breaks new ground in three ways:

  • Through a renewed and intensified focus on gender and gender-related power differentials in cinematic production and representation and particularly by shifting the focus and updating earlier feminist approaches towards old age and gender;
  • By adding a transnational comparative perspective to star studies, a field previously focused mostly on individual actors and national cinemas, and
  • By combining film analysis with production studies and digital methods and connecting film studies to other areas of gerontology and gender studies in a systematic fashion, with potential rewards for policy.

AGE-C contributes towards the creation of a European research space by bringing together an international team of researchers whose expertise covers an important share of the EU’s and its neighbors’ territory. Together we conduct and empirical study of how filmmakers and audiences view and interpret issues of old age and gender in European cinema. Our research helps us better understand the current state of European cinema and has further implications for health care and cultural policy
